Northfield Mn... Historical Celebrations
Each year, the first weekend after Labor Day, Northfield celebrates a historical event. A 4-day festival is held in honor of the defeat of the James-Younger gangs attempt to rob the First National Bank on September 7, 1876.
There are re-enactments of the bank raid and varieties of other entertainment. Plus, everywhere you turn, there is FOOD!
This occasion brings friends, families and neighbors together for a long weekend of fun!
NORTHFIELD HAS BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN MUCH OF ITS ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN Many of the buildings still look as they did over a century ago, with windows and cornices embellished with the 19th century architectural detail. The shop owners still practice the art of hometown service, while the coffee houses and restaurants serve as gathering places for the community faithful.
Shopping pleasure takes many form and promises appeal for visitors who seek antiques, distinctive gifts, a variety of department stores, unique shops, confectioneries, and something for every family member.
BRIDGE SQUARE MEMORIAL IS THE CENTER OF down town NORTHFIELD
If pays tribute to the men and women from the area that served and saved the Union during the Civil War from 1861-1865. When former residents and college students return to Northfield, this is the first stop they make to sit and reminisce, enjoying the sound of the water flowing over the dam on its way to the gulf coast via the cannon and Mississippi Rivers.
The museum and the dam are next to Bridge Square. The dam was the original site of the Ames mill, which served the area farmers; farming is still an important area industry today. The mill now houses the world famous Malt-O-Meal Co. The museum tells the stories about the famous encounter with the James-Younger gang.
Later in the year St. Olaf College hosts their famous Christmas Festival. Thousands of visitors from throughout the world come to enjoy the musical festival. In addition, other events provide a local rhythm to the year. You must take a drive around the campus and see the beautiful archictectural work of the new and old buildings. Northfield Minnesota loves its 2 colleges.

If you are new in town or visiting, be sure to take a walk along the river front and IF STAYING OVERNITE you may want to treat yourself by staying at the Archer House, the historic Inn was built in 1877 in the French Second Empire architectural style. One of the most famous hotels in Minnesota.

Founded in 1855 by John North, as a mailing town, Northfield Mn embraced progressive New England values of its time of education, abolition, womens suffrage, temperance and a commitment to common good.
Northfields early commitment to education has created two outstanding colleges with national reputation- Carleton College founded in 1866 and Saint Olaf College in 1874. Two charter schools are also in the area. The Peaks Charter School is in Dundas.
There is a new hospital just North of Saint Olaf College, the 37-bed hospital and 40 bed skilled nursing facility serves the area.
