When former residents and college students return to Northfield, this is the first stop they make to sit and reminisce, enjoying the sound of the water flowing over the dam on its way to the gulf coast via the cannon and Mississippi Rivers.The museum and the dam are next to Bridge Square. The dam was the original site of the Ames mill, which served the area farmers; farming is still an important area industry today. The mill now houses the world famous Malt-O-Meal Co. The museum tells the stories about the famous encounter with the James-Younger gang.

Two charter schools are also in the area. The Peaks Charter School is in Dundas.
There is a new hospital just North of Saint Olaf College, the 37-bed hospital and 40 bed skilled nursing facility serves the area.
